We'd like to shine a spotlight on one of our volunteers, Sandy Luong. Learn a little more about Sandy and her volunteer experience below!
Quick Facts
Name: Sandy Luong
Asia Society Texas volunteer since: September 2022
Interests: Outside of working in research and volunteering at AST, you'll often find me exploring new dessert places or indulging in some retail therapy at Costco or HomeGoods.
Favorite volunteer role: My favorite volunteer role is serving as an educational assistant, where I have the opportunity to interact with guests of all ages and assist them during arts and crafts workshops.
Favorite program you've volunteered for: It's challenging to pick just one favorite program because I've enjoyed so many! However, the Bank of America Women's Leadership Series stands out as a highlight for me. This series not only provides invaluable insights into leadership but also fosters a supportive community of empowered women committed to excellence across various business and cultural spheres.
Reflection
I chose to volunteer at Asia Society Texas because of its profound dedication to fostering cross-cultural understanding and addressing complex global challenges. I admire AST's dedication to providing a platform for diverse perspectives.
One particularly memorable moment from my volunteer experience was during the Lunar New Year festival. It was heartwarming to see families from diverse backgrounds come together to enjoy the vibrant lion dance performances on the front lawn. This moment brought back cherished memories of my childhood experiences attending similar celebrations.
My advice to anyone considering volunteering with AST is to approach each shift with a genuine desire to learn and explore diverse topics. Make the most of your time by actively engaging with both guests and fellow volunteers and staff! Don't hesitate to step out of your comfort zone and explore the many volunteer opportunities within the organization.
About APAH Month at Asia Society Texas
Beginning in 2021, Asia Society Texas has celebrated Asian Pacific American Heritage Month with the Houston community and beyond through a curated calendar of events for 31 ways to celebrate over the 31 days of May. Spotlighting the traditions, talents, and contributions of Asians and Asian Americans, the calendar highlights the month's key Asia Society programming, providing a platform to showcase local artists, performers, educators, and leaders who contribute to the vibrant, multicultural tapestry of Houston while also featuring staff recommendations for our favorite music, books, movies, and more by Asian and Asian American creatives.
At Asia Society Texas, APAH Month is an opportunity to celebrate and honor Asians and Asian Americans and to uplift their stories to a broader audience as part of our goal to inspire our larger community to better understand one another through culture, conversation, and connection.
