Learn more about being a volunteer or docent at Asia Society Texas!

Most volunteering opportunities center around our programs, festivals, and tours, which primarily take place from Fall through Spring each year. While volunteer groups are welcome for larger festivals, the bulk of volunteering opportunities are better suited for individuals.

Volunteer and Docent Opportunities

  • Art and Architecture Docents lead tours through Asia Society Texas' unique building and current exhibitions on view to provide patrons with a deeper understanding of art, architecture, and culture. Asia Society Texas docents can focus solely on art or architecture or be trained for both.
  • Education Assistants help manage cultural activities for guests of all ages. Duties include preparation, setup, demonstration, and cleanup of hands-on arts and crafts workshops and projects.
  • Festival Volunteers assist with our large cultural festivals that take place throughout the year. Duties include welcoming and greeting guests, providing wayfinding assistance, distributing festival materials, supporting activities such as crafts and performances, and helping with setup and breakdown.
  • Program Volunteers assist in the management of crowds and traffic flow at programs and receptions. Duties include guiding guests to their seats, distributing program materials, directing speakers between programs and receptions, and providing assistance as needed for reception setup and breakdown.
  • Registration Volunteers welcome and register guests at our programs and special events, providing seat assignments as well as wayfinding assistance.
  • Skilled Volunteers are considered on an individual basis for specific opportunities around their skills, such as photography, data entry, language, teaching, etc.

Volunteer Requirements

  • Have a comfort level working with people from diverse backgrounds and ages.
  • Available to commit to volunteering at Asia Society Texas events for a minimum of six months. Hours are flexible.
  • Volunteers must be 15 years of age or older. Volunteers under 18 years of age must have a parent or guardian co-sign their application.

Docent Requirements

  • Commit to providing a minimum of four tours per year.
  • Participate in training sessions for new exhibitions to learn about the art on view and methods for engaging tour groups. Sessions occur as exhibitions change; in-person and on-demand access of trainings will be available.
  • Observe experienced docents and practice your tour. Training sessions give you the facts about an exhibition, while practicing and observing other docents helps you learn teaching methods and different ways to present information and manage tour groups.

Internships

Asia Society Texas’ internship program focuses on providing high school and college-aged students with opportunities to master technical skills, gain essential background knowledge, foster interpersonal skills, and build a network of educational and professional contacts. Through opportunities to build work experience, interns expand their understanding of global affairs and current events that touch upon Asia and Asian America, program development, museum operations, and nonprofit work. The internship also deepens existing relationships and establishes new relationships with high schools, universities, and other community organizations engaged in AST programming.

Paid internships at Asia Society Texas are made possible with support from Regions Bank. Internship opportunities are posted as they are available.
