HOUSTON, November 11, 2019 — About 3,500 guests enjoyed a crisp autumn evening of tasty food, upscale shopping, and more at Asia Society Texas Center's annual Night Market 2019 presented by American First National Bank.
In its seventh year, Asia Society's Night Market presented a curated selection of more than 40 local vendors and artisans who sold food, home goods, apparel, and art, lining the lawn and filling the building's grand hall and education center. Upstairs in Asia Society's building, a Japanese-style carnival returned for its second year, inviting guests of all ages to participate in different games, receive their names in Japanese, and have anime-style portraits drawn. Guests also enjoyed free admission to the exhibition Tsuruya Kōkei: Modern Kabuki Prints Revised & Revisited.
New this year, three dance groups energized visitors with K-pop dances and demonstrations. Crews Hues and Rocky and the A.T. performed, followed by a group lesson of the Chicken Noodle Soup Dance, taught by Lone Star College dance students.
Outside on the lawn, the beer garden returned for its second year, featuring a wider selection of Asian beers and special culinary offerings by Café Natalie, Cordúa Catering by Churrasco's, Tony's, and Verandah.
American First National Bank has been a longtime supporter of Night Market and other art and cultural programs at Asia Society. Additional support for Night Market came from Kroger, Texas Commission on the Arts, Lori and Neal Martin, Denka Wangdi and Gil Coelho, Van Cleef & Arpels, The Taiwanese Heritage Society of Houston, Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office in Houston, and the Houston Korean Education Center. The event was co-chaired by Janae Tsai, Denka Wangdi, and Michael Allen.
Drawing inspiration from street markets in East and Southeast Asia, Asia Society’s Night Market celebrates the vibrancy of Houston’s arts and food scenes, while also engaging people through thought-provoking exhibitions and family activities. The next Night Market is expected to take place in fall 2020.
