HOUSTON, November 5, 2022 — More than 6,000 guests braved rainy weather to enjoy food, shopping, all-ages activities, and performances at Asia Society Texas’ 10th annual Night Market festival presented by American First National Bank.
The street festival highlighted the diversity of Houston’s Asian, Asian American, and BIPOC communities, with more than 60 vendors, artisans, and partners lining the lawn and surrounding streets and filling the building’s first floor. Upstairs, guests enjoyed free exhibition admission to Yōkai: Scenes of the Supernatural in Japanese Woodblock Prints sponsored by Reliant and a Diwali-inspired funfair sponsored by Comcast, as well as a mahjong game zone and an Otaku Alley area highlighting Japanese pop culture.
In the theater, a full house enjoyed sumo wrestling demonstrations by Shōgeki Sumo, Bollywood-style dance by Infused Performing Arts and Steps for Dancing, and hip-hop dance by UH Modern. An exclusive-access Green Garden Lounge offered specialty drinks and food by Moon Rabbit.
American First National Bank has been a longtime supporter of Night Market and other art and cultural programs at Asia Society Texas. Exhibition tours during Night Market were sponsored by Reliant. Comcast provided support for the Diwali Funfair. Night Market sponsors also include Asahi; Divya and Chris Brown; the Campbell Family; Chow Down in Chinatown; CultureMap; Teri and Jeff Lee; J.D. Joyce Investment Management Group; Martha Turner Sotheby’s International Realty; the Southwest Management District; Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Houston; Texas Commission on the Arts; Stevie Vu and Terry Wong; Denka Wangdi and Gil Coelho; and Wu Wei, Khai Tran, and Angela Chiang.
Drawing inspiration from street markets found in East and Southeast Asia, AST’s annual Night Market celebrates Houston’s Asian and Asian American communities while also engaging visitors through thought-provoking exhibitions and all-ages activities. The next Night Market is expected to take place in fall 2023.
