Video: Rules of the Road: China's Talent Program and U.S. Research Discrimination
ASIA SOCIETY HONG KONG, July 20, 2020 — In 2008, China's Communist Party created the Thousand Talents Program (TTP) to counteract the brain drain trend that had seen many of the country's best and brightest minds emigrate and settle overseas. The stated goal of the TTP was to build an "innovative society." However, in the past few years, the United States government has becoming increasingly alarmed by and hostile towards the TTP, particularly in the technology development domain. Cases of Chinese discrimination in universities and within corporations are increasingly institutionalized. Hurdles to cooperation are becoming more commonplace. As neither the U.S. nor China would benefit from a permanent technological decoupling, what steps should China take to make their national talent programs more open? Likewise, how can America make its investigation into these alleged cases more transparent? A panel discusses.

Presented in partnership with the United States Studies Centre, Dr. Lavina Lee of Macquarie University hosts a discussion among Ashley Townshend, Director of Foreign Policy and Defence with the United States Studies Centre; Dr. Lynn Kuok, Shangri-La Dialogue Senior Fellow for Asia–Pacific Security, International Institute for Strategic Studies; and Richard Maude, Executive Director of Policy with the Asia Society Australia and Senior Fellow of Asia Society Policy Institute.

Video: Crossing the Precipice: The India–China Border Clash
ASIA SOCIETY POLICY INSTITUTE, July 7, 2020 — A panel of experts discusses the implications of June's deadly border clash between India and China. Participants include Tanvi Madan, senior fellow of The India Project at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C.; Ambassador Nirupama Rao, a retired Indian diplomat; and M. Taylor Fravel, Arthur and Ruth Sloan professor of political science and director of the Security Studies Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The conversation was moderated by Suhasini Haidar, diplomatic editor of The Hindu.
