Asia Society Texas Center, in collaboration with Dominic Walsh Dance Theater (DWDT), presents the world premiere of Uzume, a newly choreographed work that is a riveting combination of ballet, contemporary dance, and Japanese taiko drumming.
Uzume—the name of the Shinto goddess of joy and happiness who is allied with the art of spiritual rhythm making and movement—is inspired by Walsh's respect for and fascination with the people and culture of Japan and features Japanese taiko drummer Kensaku Satou and ballerina Hana Sakai.
The guest artists from Japan join DWDT star dancer Domenico Luciano to form a cohesive rhythmic unit that captures the traditions of Japan and creates a sensory feast of sound, vibration, and visually stunning images.
Sabrina Lynn Motley, Asia Society Texas Center's Director of Programs and Education, says, "We are thrilled to include this work as part of our inaugural performing arts season. Presenting Dominic Walsh's choreography along with Kensaku Satou's masterful drumming and Hana Sakai's ever-surprising movement vocabulary is emblematic of Asia Society's mission of connecting Asians and Americans through the arts."
