Resilience, Importance of Common Ground Highlighted in Early Screening of 'Sight' and Conversation With Dr. Ming Wang
HOUSTON, September 7, 2023 — Asia Society Texas welcomed world-renowned laser eye surgeon and philanthropist Dr. Ming Wang for an early screening of the film Sight followed by a discussion moderated by Charles Foster, Chairman of Foster LLP, about Dr. Wang’s life which inspired the film.
Help Us Build a More Inclusive World
Sight follows Dr. Wang's life from his childhood in Hangzhou, China, where his dream of becoming a physician was delayed due to the numerous hardships he endured during the Cultural Revolution. The movie shows Dr. Wang's determination and hard work as he succeeded in being accepted to Harvard and MIT, culminating in his eventual development of an innovative technology that has helped restore sight to millions of people around the world.
During the moderated conversation, Dr. Wang reflected on the importance of combining medical knowledge with technology, his experience as a migrant, and the encouraging stories of his patients. He also shared that when he came to the U.S., he felt a personal responsibility to contribute and give back to society — and believed the best way to do so was by expanding access to healthcare. Through his foundation, he has helped thousands of children access healthcare to improve or regain their vision and go "from darkness to sight.”
Dr. Wang described the film as a story about faith, freedom, and finding common ground with others. He emphasized the importance of setting aside differences and finding the common ground for unity. He hopes the film will inspire more people to make remarkable societal contributions, tell their own stories, and work together to build a “better tomorrow.”
Sight opens nationally in theaters on October 27, 2023.
