Asia Society Texas Center, in partnership with the Houston Korean Education Center, is pleased to offer online Korean Language I classes for adults who would like to learn the Korean language at a beginner level.

The Korean Level I Class is an introduction through simple conversations and culture. Students will engage in basic dialogue exchanges and write short sentences, which will enhance listening, speaking, and writing skills. The course is designed to build a foundation in the Korean language by including everyday oral communication and interactive activities emphasizing pronunciation, vocabulary, and expressions. Students will also learn the skills to read and decode the Korean alphabet.

Culture is an integral part of the curriculum. In addition to language skills, students will develop an appreciation and understanding of Korean customs, culture, philosophy, and history.

Students must also purchase their own textbook. The pricing and information for the textbook can be found here.

About the Instructor

Chelsea Guerra

Chelsea Guerra is a teacher working with the Houston Korean Education Center. She is a new teacher, having just completed her first successful semester teaching a level 2 class at the HKEC office location. She graduated from the University of Florida with degrees in Linguistics and TESOL, as well as a focus on language acquisition. She began her Korean language learning journey after completing a summer Korean language program with Seoul National University before beginning college. She has continued her Korean language studies for the past 10 years, during which she spent 2 and a half years teaching English to Korean students in Seoul. Her teaching philosophy involves instilling the fundamentals of language learning, while also incorporating valuable cultural knowledge through various media. Through the perspective of a non-native Korean speaker, she hopes to provide a unique insight into an English speaker's struggles with understanding and speaking Korean.

Education programs at Asia Society are presented by Wells Fargo. Major support for Education & Outreach also comes from Nancy C. Allen, Chinhui Juhn and Eddie Allen, and Mary Lawrence Porter, as well as The Brown Foundation, Inc., and The Houston Endowment. Additional funding is provided by the George and Mary Josephine Hamman Foundation, as well as through contributions from the Friends of Asia Society, a dedicated group of individuals committed to bringing exceptional programming and exhibitions to Asia Society Texas Center.
