Vicky Tsai, founder of skincare brand Tatcha, joins Asia Society Texas to discuss the business challenges she has faced, initiatives to support young women business leaders, and the need to create opportunities for collective action.

Despite efforts to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), many groups – including women leaders – continue to face challenges when looking for career advancement or development opportunities. In the corporate world, substantial obstacles exist, such as the impact of stereotypes, the hardships of finding outside community support, and other cultural barriers. Nevertheless, the contributions of Asian American women to the economy and the business world are substantive, significant, and uplifting.

Six years after Vicky Tsai founded the beauty and skincare company Tatcha in 2009 out of her garage in San Francisco, it was named the second fastest-growing woman-led company on the Inc. 500 list. Tatcha has an extensive line of products and counts many celebrities – including Jennifer Aniston, Meghan Markle, and Selena Gomez — as fans. Through Tsai's leadership, Tatcha has inspired many women to re-think the role of beauty and harmony in their lives.

About the Speaker

Vicky Tsai is an Asian American entrepreneur and philanthropist. She founded Tatcha, a skincare brand inspired by the wisdom and wonders of Japanese beauty traditions and ingredients. Tatcha was the result of her journey seeking to create a positive change in the world and herself. The brand aims to bring harmony to its clients, avoiding unhealthy beauty standards. In 2018, Tsai won the WWD Beauty Inc.’s Founders Award while the company reached the top in earned media value (EMV) among skincare brands. Recent recognitions include Marie Claire Changemaker (2022) and Inc. Magazine’s 100 Top Female Founders List (2021).

Her concern for fostering impactful initiatives lead her to support girls’ education in Africa, Southeast Asia, and literacy programs in the U.S. Tatcha’s program Beautiful Faces, Beautiful Futures, in partnership with Room to Read, has funded over 7 million days of school for girls since 2014. She holds a BA in Economics from Wellesley College and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
