Film Screening and Q&A: Memory Strata: Works by Sky Hopinka and Simon Liu

Houston Cinema Arts Society and PSA (Pleasure.Style.Attitude) present a week-long virtual screening of seven films by two contemporary experimentalists whose work exist at the juncture of personal expression and cultural memory. Sky Hopinka's films explore the spiritual and aesthetic traditions of First Peoples within the U.S., while Simon Liu's work delineates the richness and anxiety of diaspora existing between the U.S., the U.K., and Hong Kong.

Livestream Performance: Constant State of Otherness by Unit Souzou

Unit Souzou will showcase their unique blend of Japanese folk dance and drumming traditions as they translate their newest work, Constant State of Otherness, into a virtual event with Washington, D.C.-based Dance Place. The performance will be a multi-layered taiko theatrical project exploring the feelings of isolation, alienation, displacement, and otherness that come from not having an easy sense of belonging, both as a physical place and an emotional space. Co-Directors Michelle Fujii and Toru Watanabe will share their creative journeys and inspirations, from past projects to recent works and events, inviting viewers into their evolving process to create a new space for community, storytelling, and performance.

Virtual Cook-Along Series: Lucky Chow

Join Danielle Chang for a cook-along and live viewing of season 4 of Lucky Chow, a celebration of the Asian American experience through the lens of food broadcast on public television stations throughout the United States. The series will feature personalities from this newest season, with the first virtual event on Sunday, May 10, and continuing every Thursday evening, May 14 – June 11.
