Daniel Ho's Musical Virtuosity Dazzles Asia Society Texas Center
HOUSTON, October 26, 2013 — With one stroke of his ukulele it’s easy to see and hear why Daniel Ho has racked up so many Grammy Awards and nominations. An engrossed audience savored on Ho’s stunning virtuosity and fretwork agility during his hour-long set. He closed with two encore numbers following standing ovations.
Throughout his original compositions (sung in English and Hawaiian) and a cover of Joni Mitchell’s "Big Yellow Taxi," Ho made the concert more intimate alternating between his custom-made ukulele, slack key guitar, and electronic piano. The gifted vocalist and multi-instrumentalist was joined by Grammy Award-winning bassist, Steve Billman, who has performed more than 20 years alongside Ho.
Between songs, Ho shared amusing tid bits about his native Hawaii, giving the audience insight into how many ways the state’s beloved dish, Spam, is enjoyed. The consummate music educator, Ho invited audience members who attended his morning workshop to bring their ukuleles and play along.
