Rice University President Receives Asia Society's Top Honor
HOUSTON, November 4, 2015 — Asia Society Texas Center was honored to award the Roy M. Huffington Award for Contributions to International Understanding to David W. Leebron, President of Rice University. President Leebron, in conversation with Douglas L. Foshee, discussed the importance of international education in promoting cross-cultural understanding and the vital role Houston must play as a global city, not just in terms of business, but as a source of intellectual capital.
The third annual Huffington Award Luncheon was held at the Hilton Americas and more than 500 guests were in attendance. Listing off a series of international achievements of Houston organizations particularly Rice’s own international partnerships and it significant international student body coming from more than 80 countries, President Leebron left the audience with a deeper sense of pride about Houston that he called “the most misunderstood city in the country”. Following the program, Leebron held a private round table with 40 local high school students to discuss the value of international education and studying abroad in shaping personal identity.
