2023 ExploreAsia Culture Camp Truck Art

Truck Art and Urdu Language With Indus Arts Council
Monday, June 5 – Friday, June 9, 2023・9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Daily
Be transported to the streets of Pakistan and dive into truck art and the Urdu language in this camp presented with the Indus Arts Council! Work with artists and teachers to create your own colorful art pieces.
Recommended for students ages 9–12.

2023 Explore Asia Culture Camp Documentary Filmmaking

Documentary Filmmaking
Monday, June 12 – Friday, June 23, 2023・9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Daily
In this two-week filmmaking camp, explore the themes of memory and world religions while scripting, filming, and acting in an original movie under the guidance of a professional television producer.
Recommended for students ages 12–14.

Manga POP!
Monday, July 10 – Friday, July 14, 2023・9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Daily
Attention, artists and manga fanatics! Create your own comics inspired by the Japanese manga style, with opportunities for Beginner and Advanced students to bring their comics to life on paper and the web.
Recommended for students ages 9–14.

Animals and Fantastic Beasts of Asia
Monday, July 24 – Friday, July 28, 2023・9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Daily
Embark on a safari across Asia! Learn about the unique animals and mythical creatures found in various Asian countries, and hear stories and legends featuring these animals and other fantastical beasts!
Recommended for students ages 6–9.

Master Chef Showdown With Bite of HOPE
Monday, August 7 – Friday, August 11, 2023・9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Daily
Whose cuisine reigns supreme? Learn about food traditions across Asia while honing your cooking skills to prepare for a final competition before a panel of Houston's top chefs!
Recommended for students ages 13–17.

Young Leaders Institute

Young Leaders Institute 2023

The Young Leaders Institute (YLI) is a week-long summer program for high school students that promotes global competence, elevates leadership skills, and connects students from across diverse backgrounds and experiences. Since launching in 2016, YLI has provided new perspectives and strengthened skills for more than 400 students.

During the Institute, participants will work in teams throughout the week researching, debating, and presenting solutions for the challenges facing our world. With mentorship and guidance from Asia Society Texas staff, students will be provided opportunities to develop more in-depth knowledge about global issues; to hone communication, collaboration, and presentation skills for the future; and to engage respectfully and thoughtfully with experts, staff, and peers to transform their understanding of leadership.

Applications for the 2023 Young Leaders Institute are accepted on a rolling basis, with students encouraged to apply early to secure their placement. There is limited capacity for each session, and the deadline to apply is Monday, April 17, 2023. YLI 2023: Energy and Renewables SQ

Session 1: Energy and Renewables
Monday, June 26 – Friday, June 30, 2023・8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Daily
Explore the groundbreaking discoveries and debates around energy and renewables, including the roles played by transitioning industries, new technology, and world governments relating to developing economies and the need to guarantee a sustainable future.

YLI 2023: Equality and Human Development

Session 2: Equality and Human Development
Monday, July 17 – Friday, July 21, 2023・8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Daily
Examine the multiple angles of human development and learn how government, nonprofit, and private sector initiatives can reduce inequality and promote access to healthcare, education, and economic development.

YLI 2023: The Geopolitics of Space SQ

Session 3: The Geopolitics of Space
Monday, July 31 – Friday, August 4, 2023・8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Daily
Learn more about the complex dynamics of international cooperation and competition in outer space exploration, and examine the outcomes of space research and policy as they relate to politics, economy, public safety, environment, communications, and human development.

What Do I Get Out of the Young Leaders Institute?

Participants of the 2023 Young Leaders Institute will receive the following:

The Young Leaders Institute provides an educative experience valued at approximately $2,000.

Application Requirements

High school students form the Greater Houston area are encouraged to apply for the Young Leaders Institute. While there are no age restrictions, students must be high school students in Fall 2023.

There is no GPA requirement. Neither specific coursework nor prior interest in foreign policy, international relations, or international business is necessary. Applications will be evaluated holistically, with emphasis on strong essay answers. The Young Leaders Institute welcomes students from all backgrounds and interests.

Students must have availability to commit to the full week-long session., 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. daily. Additionally, students need to have their own transportation to and from Asia Society Texas Center.

Laptops and reliable access to the Internet are necessary for policy research and group work.

Application Process

How do I apply?
Interested students must fully complete and submit an online application, which includes a short essay. Letters of recommendation, additional writing samples, or admission interviews are not required for application or acceptance to the Institute.

When is the deadline for application?
Applications will be accepted until midnight on Monday, April 17, 2023. Spots are limited, so students are encouraged to apply early to increase their chances of admission.

Can I apply to more than one session?
Yes. Students may apply to one, two, or all three sessions of the Young Leaders Institute simply by checking the sessions they are interested in on the application form.

What if the session I am interested in is already full?
Each session has limited capacity. Due to rolling applications, a session may reach capacity before the deadline. Students may request to be placed on the waitlist.

Can I submit my application after the posted deadline?
If the Institute is full at the deadline, applications will be closed and no further applications will be accepted. In the event that spots remain open in the Institute, the application deadline will be extended with a new deadline to be determined and publicly updated on the Asia Society Texas website.

How do I check the status of my application? When will I hear if I have been accepted?
Following the submission of the online application form, students will be contacted individually only if additional information is required. Acceptances will be sent out on a rolling basis. If students have specific questions regarding their application, they may email TXYLI@asiasociety.org.

What if I cannot attend a YLI session after being accepted?
Please inform us as soon as possible if you can no longer attend a YLI session that you have been accepted into, by emailing TXYLI@asiasociety.org. Participation fees, once paid, are nonrefundable.

Cost and Scholarship Information

It is free to apply!
Upon acceptance to the Institute, a nonrefundable participation fee (per session) will be due to guarantee placement: $75 for Asia Society members, $100 for nonmembers.

Scholarships
Need-based scholarships are available. Students who indicate interest in a scholarship on their application form will be expected to submit information to demonstrate financial need such as a parent or guardian's W2 or proof of free or reduced lunch.

Refunds
If your plans have changed and you can no longer attend a session that you have been accepted into, please inform us as soon as possible by emailing TXYLI@asiasociety.org. Participation fees, once paid, are nonrefundable.

Health and Safety

All Asia Society Texas staff, interns, and volunteers are vaccinated for COVID-19. Additional health and safety policies may be shared with students as the dates approach, if needed.

Policies are informed by current recommendations from local, state, and federal health officials, agencies, and authorities, including Harris County recommendations and CDC guidelines. As such, these polices may shift or change.
