June 23, 2022 — Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author Matthieu Aikins and freelance photographer Jim Huylebroek talk about their experiences covering Afghanistan and its sudden fall to the Taliban in 2021. Aikins and Huylebroek recalled arriving in Afghanistan for the first time, studying the language, immersing in the culture, and learning the people and the country — insight apparent in their prize-winning piece. Marcus Brauchli, jury chair for the Osborn Elliott Prize for Excellence in Journalism on Asia, moderated the conversation while Dorinda Elliott, executive director of the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies at Harvard University, gave the opening remarks.
