“Increasingly powerful, prosperous, and authoritarian, China has become a more intense and successful competitor with the world’s established powers – economically, technologically, diplomatically, militarily, and in influencing people’s hearts and minds”, writes Bates Gill in his latest publication on China, Daring to Struggle: China's Global Ambitions Under Xi Jinping. It is for that reason, argues Bates, that a deeper understanding of “what China wants” will remain a matter of great interest to foreign policy practitioners, business leaders, as well as interested publics around the world.

So, what is it that China wants? And how does the country intend to attain its goals? What do Chinese leaders mean when they talk of “the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation”? Which effects is China’s increasingly ambitious foreign policy having on regional security, economic and technological competition and the world order? And how should governments, businesses and societies across the globe manage the complex and multifaceted challenges arising from China’s ambitions?

This June, Bates, who is the first Executive Director of the Asia Society Policy Institute’s Center for China Analysis (CCA), is visiting us in Zurich and will share his insights into his extensive China research, as well the work and goals of the CCA.
