The United States and Mongolia: Warm Relations in a Cold Place

The Ambassador will address recent developments in Mongolia, relations between the United States and Mongolia, as well as the prospects for U.S. business opportunities.
Asia Society is pleased to honor President of Mongolia, Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj, at the 24th annual Asia Society Washington Awards Dinner, which will be held on Wednesday, June 15th at The Ritz-Carlton (1150 22nd Street, NW). President Elbegdorj will receive our Distinguished Statesman Award in recognition of his notable accomplishments leading Mongolia through the political and economic reforms of democratization and privatization.

Ambassador Addleton is a career member of the U.S. Foreign Service from the state of Georgia. Prior to his appointment as Ambassador to Mongolia, he served as Counselor for International Development at the U.S. Mission to the European Union in Brussels, Belgium. Previously, he served as USAID Mission Director in Pakistan, Cambodia and Mongolia and as USAID Program Officer in Jordan, Kazakhstan, South Africa and Yemen. Prior to joining USAID in 1984, he also worked briefly at the World Bank, Macon Telegraph and Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He has written a number of books and articles on Asia, including Some Far and Distant Place (University of Georgia Press) and Undermining the Center (Oxford University Press).
Ambassador Addleton has a PhD from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and a BS from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. He speaks Urdu and Hindi. He was born and raised in Pakistan, where his parents served for more than 30 years as missionaries.
