Video: 'Timing Seems Right' for US Special Envoy to Burma
In the video below, Asia Society Vice President of Global Policy Programs Suzanne DiMaggio reacts to reports that the Obama Administration is preparing to name Derek Mitchell, currently Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Affairs, as the country's first Special Envoy to Burma (Myanmar). In the video, DiMaggio explains why she believes Mitchell would be a "very good choice" for that role. But, she warns, "change in Burma will not come quickly."
DiMaggio directed the Asia Society's Task Force on U.S. Policy toward Burma/Myanmar, which published the report, "Current Realities and Future Possibilities in Burma: Options for U.S. Policy."
