More Crises for Pakistan
Pakistan’s crises are multiplying, reports Asia Society Bernard Schwartz Fellow Hassan Abbas. “In addition to the ongoing military operations in the Pakistan-Afghanistan tribal areas, Pakistan is currently faced with three additional challenges. A natural disaster recently hit Pakistan's northern areas where landslides are exacerbating the threat that a newly formed 16km-long lake on the River Hunza has posed. Several villages are under water and about 13,000 people have already been displaced. It is a tough mountainous region, and the government is seriously challenged due to poor disaster management infrastructure in the area. The second issue relates to the resumption of ethnically-motivated targeted killings in Karachi, worsening the law and order situation in the country. Finally, an executive-judiciary tussle is increasing, which might prove to be a death knell for the country's democratic process.”
