Donald Stadtner — Cautionary Tales About Rage, Fate, and Forgiveness
VIEW EVENT DETAILSArt Lecture
A devoted but wronged wife becomes a Hindu goddess. A mother goes mad from defying society and becomes a Buddhist renunciant. Both goddess and mother illustrate themes that are as relevant today as they were two thousand years ago. In this illustrated lecture, art historian and curator Donald Stadtner explores the complex syncretism of religious practice in Sri Lanka.
Donald Stadtner was for many years an Associate Professor at the University of Texas, Austin, after receiving his Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley. He was recently co-curator for the Asia Society's Buddhist Art of Myanmar exhibition and is now preparing Sacred Sites of Sri Lanka.
