Dave Liang’s Shanghai Restoration Project and Gingger Shankar
VIEW EVENT DETAILSPlease note: this event is now sold out.
Chinese-American pianist Dave Liang makes a rare appearance with The Shanghai Restoration Project, whose popular remix of electronica, hip hop and traditional Chinese instrumentation has been heard at the Beijing Olympics, on NPR and on numerous films and TV commercials around the world. The band draws its inspiration from the 1930s jazz clubs of Shanghai, and the performance features vocalist Zhang Le singing in this distinctive style.
Composer, singer and double violinist Gingger Shankar will perform a set of traditional and contemporary compositions with tabla player Jas Ahluwalia. Shankar’s own mix of Indian ragas and hip-hop-influenced electronics has been featured in many films, including the blockbuster The Passion of the Christ, and at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Followed by a conversation with the artists.
The evening will also feature a "work in progress" reading of Himalaya Song, a collaboration with filmmaker Mridu Chandra that is premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in 2012.
