New Report | The 2024 Taiwanese Elections: A Primer

November 15, 2023 – A new paper from the Asia Society Policy Institute’s Center for China Analysis offers a comprehensive primer on the upcoming elections in Taiwan, and analyzes the roles played by China and the United States in these elections.
Simona Grano, Senior Fellow on Taiwan at the Asia Society Policy Institute’s Center for China Analysis is the author of the paper, which presents an overview of Taiwan’s electoral system and summarizes candidates' positions in the polls. The paper also introduces each party and its candidate, and sketches the ideological positions that the parties and candidates represent.
“The United States’ overriding concern should be to figure out how to strengthen Taiwan’s resilience without departing from the current situation of strategic ambiguity — despite China’s more aggressive behavior — while continuing to offer Taiwan support in crucial matters, such as defense and the economy, all the while sustaining its democratic system,” Grano writes.
