Gen. Petraeus's Mission
“General Petraeus is inheriting responsibility for an Afghanistan teetering on the verge of disaster,” says Asia Society Executive Vice President Jamie Metzl, on the general’s ongoing meetings with President Karzai this week. “Unless significant progress can be made in establishing credible and far more effective governance, getting the Pakistanis to stop supporting the Afghan Taliban, and reversing Taliban gains, even General Eisenhower would have a nearly impossible time turning things around within the constraints of time, money, and loss of life that are strengthening by the day.”
Jamie, who was an election observer in Afghanistan last year, is based in New York. To arrange an interview, contact the Asia Society communications department at 212-327-9271 or [email protected].
