Founded in late 2016, Humid with a Chance of Fishballs Tours, as recently seen on Netflix 'Restaurants on the Edge' (Season 1, episode 2), is a small grassroots company that strives to offer authentic and off-the-beaten-path local experiences so you can get a taste and glimpse of true local life, culture, and traditions in Hong Kong.
Virginia Chan, founder of Humid with a Chance of Fishballs, will introduce you to Mahjong, from history to simple gameplay.
During the workshop, Virginia will briefly give an overview of the 144 tiles of Mahjong, how to build sets, and how to build a winning hand. At the end of the session, students should be able to play independently on their own on a Mahjong app*.
Program
13:30 - Brief introduction to the history of Mahjong and the culture within Hong Kong.
13:40 - Overview of 144 tiles, game techniques such as building a set and a winning hand
14:15 - Practice playing on a Mahjong app*
*Please note that we will be using a Mahjong game app to enable all the students in the class to be able to play against one another. This game download is optional but the game will be used during the workshop. The Mahjong app will ask you to sign in using either your Google, Facebook, or Twitter account. Virginia is not affiliated with the app and anything you do from this 3rd Party App will be at your own risk. Any use of the 3rd Party App will be subject to and any information you provide will be governed by the terms of the 3rd Party app, including those relating to confidentiality, data privacy, and security.
Virginia Chan, is a Mahjong Teacher and learned Hong Kong/Cantonese style Mahjong as a proxy – by sitting on her mom’s lap as she played mahjong as a little girl. Her childhood's favourite hand was the 'pong pong hand' as that was the only one that her mom would like her to partake in by letting Virginia call out the pongs for her. Eventually, they gave her a seat at the table under the strict guidance of her grandma and aunties.
Through rigorous Mahjong sessions with her rather gregarious (aka crazy & loud) family, Virginia is ready to share the wealth of knowledge and the abundance of wisdom she has amassed from her elders throughout the years.
To date she has taught over 50 Mahjong courses and looks forward to teaching you how to pong, chow and sik-wu very soon.
