Rarely do academic insight and global credibility come together with as much wit and broad appeal as they do in the case of Ian Bremmer, president of Eurasia Group and one of the leading global thinkers of our time. Dr. Bremmer’s reputation for acute insight into international affairs puts him in a league of his own, and his work on Asia is no exception. Always ready to supplement a Twitter bon mot with hard data and sharp analysis, he has been critical of the Obama administration’s “Pivot to Asia,” calling for a more coherent and sustained foreign policy in the Pacific.
Why Asia, and why now? These might seem like rhetorical questions — ask almost anyone and they can tell you about China’s vaunted rise, growth in the developing world and the decline of American hegemony. Ian Bremmer’s most recent book, Every Nation for Itself: Winners and Losers in a G-Zero World explores the possibility of a foreign policy environment where no one nation can take the reins, with increasingly inward-looking Americans refusing to do the heavy lifting. What are the risks in U.S. disengagement with the rest of the world? How should the U.S. engage its allies proactively and productively as economic considerations make it more untenable for America to underwrite the security of the Asia-Pacific? Can the pivot to Asia be saved? Join Asia Society Policy Institute as we welcome Ian Bremmer for a special discussion with Asia Society President Josette Sheeran about Asia, the U.S., and the world.
