Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights and the new year, is a time to celebrate good fortune, family, and friendships. This year, we will celebrate together virtually. Please join us for a day of interactive performances inspired by Diwali. Come join us online with extraordinary artists Preeti Vasudevan, Sameer Gupta, and Parul Shah.

Schedule

1 p.m.: Light the World with Preeti Vasudevan

Choreographer and storyteller Preeti Vasudevan takes you on a magical journey of lights to a far away ancient land called India! Join her to learn how to freeze dance with your face, watch a story about a young girl and her new friends, and meet other exciting artists as they lead you through this exciting dancing journey of ancient and modern stories of lighting people’s lives with love and life. You can see more of what Preeti does at www.threshdance.org.

2 p.m.: Ganesha's Favorite Hand Drum, the Tabla with Sameer Gupta

In this interactive presentation, percussionist Sameer Gupta will demonstrate how the classical Indian tabla connects with the festival of Diwali. The audience will learn some tabla/drum rhythm language, how to use claps and waves to listen, and much more. Find out more about Sameer here.

3p.m.: Dancing Ganesh with Parul Shah

Learn the language of abinaya, the movement vocabulary of Indian dance. Parul Shah creates stories through dance, and will teach some basic dance moves. You will meet the beloved elephant headed god Ganesh who has a special place in the hearts of all celebrating Diwali. Learn more about Parul here.

Asia Society's Family Day programs are generously supported by a grant from Coca-Cola
