About this Workshop

The qipao has long been a symbol of Chinese femininity. Chosen as one of China’s national dresses in the 1920s, it was worn day-to-day as well as during important occasions. Fang Zhaoling, one of the most innovative Chinese female painters to emerge in the last decades of the 20th century, was well known for her distinguished qipao fashion style which she sported during her days in China and in her travels in throughout the world. Nowadays, the qipao has evolved into a fashion statement that exemplifies Chinese traditional female beauty, virtues, and confidence, and is gaining increasing popularity in the West as well.

In our Open Studio workshop this month, we take the concept of qipao beyond fashion into a cultural icon for designing creative everyday decorative arts.

About Open Studio

Open Studio is part of the community educational programs under The Hong Kong Jockey Club Presents — Painting Her Way: The Ink Art of Fang Zhaoling, the first in Asia Society Hong Kong Center’s 20th Century Chinese Female Artists Exhibition Series. Entitled the Jockey Club Art Education and Female Empowerment Series, these education programs aim to engage children, students, families, and the general public to highlight achievements of women in various industries while connecting to the lives and careers of the unique female artists presented in the Series.

Open Studio is a series of three workshops where participants of all ages can create, share and connect through art. On three Sundays during exhibit the on period, these workshops will take place at the Landscape Terrace at ASHK which will be turned into a space for participants to create their own artworks that respond to the exhibition theme. All art materials will be supplied and workshop facilitators will demonstrate innovative methods to inspire the creativity of those attending the event.

Participants are welcome to share their finished artworks on social media using the hashtags #ASHKFangZhaoLing and #PaintingHerWay.
