About This Workshop
In the 1960s, influenced by the modern ink master Lui Shou Kwan, Irene Chou was keen on seeking new ideas and infiltrated the style of Western abstract expressionism into her ink paintings. She simultaneously attempted to explore new techniques in seeking her visual language. She used collage and ink to express her enigmatic and disoriented vision. Her art surpasses a narration of personal life and incidents; it is the reflection of her contemplative emotion towards life. In this workshop, the instructor will demonstrate different techniques and material for participants to experiment in creating new ink painting. Final work could be a personal collage art work by putting the experimental painting with personal belongings, just like Irene Chou.
About Open Studio
The Hong Kong Jockey Club presents A World Within: The Art and Inspiration of Irene Chou as the third instalment in its “20th Century Chinese Female Artist Series.” Irene Chou is one of the most inventive artists at the forefront of Hong Kong’s New Ink Art Movement. Her visual language starkly different to other ink artists. Chou was remarkable for paving new possibilities in Chinese ink painting through a highly original abstract visual language, and daring in material experimentation with ink and paper.
Sunday Open Studio Series invites visitors to be inspired by the exhibition and create their own art work in response to the works. Open Studio will run on four Sundays during the exhibition period, with each workshop dedicated to different themes. Basic art materials will be supplied and educators will be present to provide assistance.
