The dishes which will be demonstrated during this sharing sessions are Nasi lemak, Otak-otak and Pulut panggang.
Nasi lemak is a Malay fragrant rice dish cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaf. It is commonly found in Malaysia, where it is considered the national dish; it is also the native dish in neighbouring areas with significant Malay populations such as Singapore; Brunei, and Southern Thailand.
Otak-otak is a grilled fish cake made of ground fish meat mixed with tapioca starch and spices. It is widely known across Southeast Asia, especially in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, where it is traditionally served fresh, wrapped inside a banana leaf, as well as in many Asian stores internationally — being sold as frozen food. It can be eaten solely as a snack or with steamed rice as part of a meal.
Pulut panggang is a famous, traditional Malay snack that contains steamed, glutinous rice with a spicy sambal filling. The rice is then wrapped in banana leaves and grilled over a traditional charcoal stove. This special Malay snack is very filling and is usually served at teatime. It is good eaten hot—fresh from the charcoal fire. However, you can still make this using a pan, since charcoal stove is not easily available nowadays. Therefore, the taste is slightly different from the authentic, grilled version.
