Addressing the burgeoning field of design curating in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area region in a global context, DESIGN TRUST / RCA FELLOWSHIP IN DESIGN CURATION provides advanced research into curatorial practice in relation to contemporary design and recent design history. Returned from the Royal College of Art in London, Fellows Mina Song and Sunnie Chan will present their research exploring curatorial practice and theory in relation to existing and emergent design disciplines, and its place within the interdisciplinary curatorial field. The presentations will be followed by panel discussion, co-moderate by Marisa Yiu and Doryun Chong.
Mina Song was educated as a visual designer and holds degrees from Seoul National University, Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She practised professionally in the design field before moving into cultural administration for community arts organisations in Hong Kong. Mina worked for the Hong Kong Arts Centre and Community Art Network, where she contributed to the multi-year Art@ Government Buildings project, which commissioned artworks for installation in public buildings in Hong Kong.
Sunnie Chan is a design exhibition-maker based in Hong Kong. She holds degrees from the University of Essex majoring History of Art & Film Studies, and the Hong Kong Baptist University in MA Communication. She has been working as an independent curator and with Gallery 27, one of the few design-focused galleries in Hong Kong spanning across graphics, photography and design objects. In 2018, Sunnie was a Research Associate for M+ museum on Hong Kong graphic design and the museum’s opening display.
Doryun Chong is Deputy Director, Curatorial, and Chief Curator, M+. Appointed as the inaugural Chief Curator in 2013, Chong oversees all curatorial activities and programmes, including acquisitions, exhibitions, learning and public programmes, and digital initiatives encompassing the museum’s three main disciplinary areas of design and architecture, moving image, and visual art. Prior to joining M+, Chong worked in various curatorial capacities at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis (2003–2009) and the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2009–2013).
Marisa Yiu is the Co-founder and Executive Director of Design Trust, an initiative of the registered charity Hong Kong Ambassadors of Design. Yiu is responsible for spearheading the creation of long-term platforms to support innovative and thought-provoking investigations in various design disciplines, focused on Hong Kong, the Greater Bay area region and internationally. She is also an architect and Founding Partner of ESKYIU, a multi-disciplinary architecture and design studio actively integrating culture, community, art and technology.
