An evening city scene illuminated by a brilliant skyline filled with neon signs is an important collective memory of Hong Kong. While we see the disappearing traditional calligraphy and signboards as a cultural crisis, is it possible to RECONNECT CALLIGRAPHY with SIGNBOARDS and RECREATE streetscape in the future? Can calligraphy get inspirations from signboard designs and RECREATE a new path of art that is unique to Hong Kong?
Ken Fung and Kevin Mak, founders of @streetsignhk, will share with you their stories of rescuing these signboards, and discovering the relation reverse-engineering the process of signboard creation. Sam Chan from @callisupply will share on the possible future of these traditional art forms: signboard design and calligraphy creation. The exclusive tour will be conducted outside normal exhibition time.
Proceeds will be used to support the preservation work of streetsignhk
About @streetsignhk
@streetsignhk is a non-profit concern group founded by two architects, Ken Fung & Kevin Mak, in October 2017 that aims at promoting street signs as urban cultural heritage. Urban streetscape is one of the many aspects that defines the character of a city, and in Hong Kong, signboards, and neon signs in particular, play a key role. In recent years due to enforcement of new building regulations and concerns from the general public on safety, we noticed a trend of signboards rapidly disappearing and our distinctive streetscape fading. @streetsignhk aims to raise the awareness of preservation by promoting the cultural and historic importance of signboards and rescue unwanted signboards for education and conservation use.
