[WEBCAST] Disruptive Asia | Publication Launch: Sustainability of the Asian CenturyVIEW EVENT DETAILS
Is Asia’s rise sustainable - environmentally, economically and socially?
As the impact of COVID is felt across Asia, the growth trajectory for the region has changed dramatically and focus has shifted to survival and recovery to protect people and their livelihoods. The novel coronavirus has shaken our institutions, our systems, and societies, and slowed progress on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It has also deaccelerated Asia’s rapid growth. Before this crisis, we were celebrating the start of the Asian Century - a fundamental global shift in economic, political and cultural influence and power. Yet this rise also gave way to relentless pressure on our planet and resources. As we rebuild our foundations in this new normal era, how can our region survive and thrive sustainably?
Asia Society Australia warmly invites you to a special launch event of our 2020 Disruptive Asia Publication – Sustainability of the Asia Century. As we etch ever closer to the UN’s 2030 sustainability targets, join leading international sustainability experts for a deep dive into the year that was, and a discussion of the way forward for sustainable development in the region. Drawing on the three key pillars discussed throughout the year - economic, social and environmental - former Prime Minister of New Zealand and global leader in sustainable development and gender equality the Right Honourable Helen Clark, President of WWF International, Pavan Sukhdev, Vice-President for Knowledge Management and Sustainable Development of the Asian Development Bank, Dr Bambang Susantono, and CEO at ClimateWorks Australia, Anna Skarbek in-conversation with CNN Indonesia’s Desi Anwar, will share their insights and predictions on the outlook for a sustainable future in Asia.
This discussion will be the final instalment of our live series exploring the Sustainability Edition of Asia Society Australia’s Disruptive Asia project, a major thought-leadership initiative that looks at how Asia’s rise is impacting Australia’s foreign policy, economy and society and how Australia should respond.
Date: Thursday 26 November 2020
Time: 6 - 7 p.m. AEDT
This event is open to the public and will be cast through YouTube LIVE. Registration is essential.

About our Speakers
Disruptive Asia is a thought-leadership project by Asia Society Australia launched in 2017. It presents – through long-form essays – new perspectives and policy recommendations on how Asia’s rise is impacting Australia’s foreign policy, economy and society and how Australia should respond. Disruptive Asia deliberately looks at both external aspects of Australia’s relationship with Asia (foreign policy, business connectivity, international education) and their domestic implications and manifestations (community relations, leadership diversity, education settings and capabilities).
Asia Society Australia acknowledges the support of the Victorian Government.
