Asia Society Australia invites you to join this rare public appearance from Executive Director of Human Rights Watch, Kenneth Roth, on his visit to Australia as he outlines the major challenges facing a region battling issues of censorship, crimes against humanity, political instability and rising illiberalism.
As leader of one of the world’s premiere human rights organisations who meets with Heads of State and Foreign Ministers around the world, Mr Roth will outline how democracies can push back against authoritarian rule, the rise of “zombie democracies”, and the state of human rights in China, Myanmar and Afghanistan, as well as the ongoing situation in Ukraine.
Mr Roth will be joined in discussion by La Trobe Asia Research Officer, Kate Clayton, to assess crises across the region and what governments, business, civil society and ordinary people do to foster a safer and more equitable world.

About Our Speakers
Kenneth Roth, Executive Director, Human Rights Watch
Kenneth Roth is the executive director of Human Rights Watch, one of the world's leading international human rights organizations, which operates in more than 90 countries. Prior to joining Human Rights Watch in 1987, Roth served as a federal prosecutor in New York and for the Iran-Contra investigation in Washington, DC. A graduate of Yale Law School and Brown University, Roth has conducted numerous human rights investigations and missions around the world. He has written extensively on a wide range of human rights abuses, devoting special attention to issues of international justice, counterterrorism, the foreign policies of the major powers, and the work of the United Nations.
Kate Clayton, Research Officer, La Trobe Asia
Kate Clayton is a Research Officer at La Trobe Asia, La Trobe University. Her research looks at security, geopolitics and climate change in the Asia-Pacific. Kate has written op-eds in the Canberra Times, The Conversation, Lowy Institute on gender, climate change and security. She has also provided media commentary on human rights to ABC News. Kate is Chief Operations Officer at Young Australians in International Affairs.
