As we emerge from the immediate crisis of COVID-19 and enter the ‘build-back’ era, how can we make our investment dollars really count, tackle issues of sustainability and drive regional, global and systemic change? What power do the younger generations have in investing for a better world?

Join us for a masterclass with Emily Chew, Asia 21 alumna, Global Head of Sustainability for Investment Management at Morgan Stanley and member of Asia Society Australia’s Advisory Council, as she explains the function of social impact investing in global economic recovery efforts and shares a career journey that spans across Asia and the USA in finance, investment and law.

This session will be hosted by Gen A member Anorah John, Innovation Project Specialist at WWF-Australia.

Emily Chew, Global Head of Sustainability for Investment Management, Morgan Stanley

Emily Chew is Global Head of Sustainability at Morgan Stanley Investment Management and chairs the firm’s Sustainable Investing Council. Before joining Morgan Stanley in 2020, Emily was Global Head of ESG Research and Integration for Manulife Investment Management in Hong Kong and Boston, where she built an ESG investing program for public markets investments encompassing research, investee stewardship, thought leadership and thematic product development.

Previously, Emily was Head of Asia-Pacific ESG Research for MSCI Inc. in Beijing and Hong Kong, leading a team of ESG research analysts covering the Asia-Pacific constituents of the MSCI All Country World Index. Emily commenced her career as a capital markets lawyer with Baker & McKenzie in Melbourne, Australia, with a focus on funds management, capital raisings, and REITs. Emily is a member of the Principles for Responsible Investment’s Listed Equities Integration Subcommittee, and formerly served as rotating chair of the Steering Committee of the Climate Action 100+ investor engagement initiative, and as chair of the Asian Investor Group on Climate Change. She holds an MBA from the University of Oxford, and Bachelors of Laws and Arts (honors) from the University of Melbourne.

Anorah John, Gen A and Innovation Project Specialist, WWF-Australia

Anorah John is the Innovation Project Specialist at WWF-Australia and a member of Asia Society Australia's Gen A network. She leads WWF's Impactio - a technology platform that enables cross-sectoral collaboration between impact ventures, subject matter experts, funding opportunities and support. In the last year, she led the Sustainability Advantage Impact Challenge collaboration with NSW Government to surface and support innovations related to net zero, circular economy, and biodiversity. 

Impactio was incubated through the WWF network's first impact acceleration program, Panda Labs, through which Anorah works with diverse players to formulate innovative solutions for global impact that delivers for people, the planet, and the bottom line. She started her career at PwC with a focus on Financial Services. Since then she has gone on to be a finalist at several hackathons focused on tech for social and environmental impact. In 2017, she was one of the winners of the WWF Future Cities Hackathon and was invited to work for WWF.
