Executive Briefing | Cambodia: Politics, Economics and Peace Thirty Years OnVIEW EVENT DETAILS
2021 marks the thirtieth anniversary of Cambodia’s historic Paris Peace Agreements, what lessons have we learnt since its signing? What does the economic and political future look like for Cambodia? And how can Australia maintain a constructive relationship with Cambodia while also standing up for democracy?
Since internationally observed elections in 1993, Cambodia has embarked on a process of recovery towards political stability and economic prosperity. Sustained economic growth, as well as a successful COVID-19 response and vaccine rollout, all attest to some of this progress achieved.
Furthermore, Cambodia has emerged as an intersection of geo-politics and economic tensions in the region. This has been prominent with Cambodia’s tilt towards China and its Belt and Road initiative. What do these developments in Cambodia tell us about broader dynamics in the region? Can Cambodia maintain durable relations with the West whilst also balancing its growing dependence on China?
Join Pablo Kang, Australian Ambassador to Cambodia, Charadine Pich, Deputy Executive Director of the Cambodia Institute for Cooperation and Peace, for a discussion with Leanne Howie, Manager of Global Health Initiatives at the University of Sydney, on the state of Cambodia after thirty years of peace.
