China’s ambitious One Belt One Road initiative and its impact on the region

How is China’s ambitious One Belt One Road initiative transforming the region? Asia Society Australia in partnership with National Gallery of Victoria explores the economic and geopolitical impact of  BRI in a panel led by Daniel Russel, Vice President, International Security and Diplomacy, Asia Society Policy Institute & former Assistant Secretary of State for Asia and the East Asian and Pacific Affairs.

This event forms part of a series of programs revolving around this year's NGV Melbourne Winter Masterpieces: presenting China’s ancient terracotta warriors alongside an exhibition of new works by one of the world’s most exciting contemporary artists, Cai Guo-Qiang. 

The dual presentation of Chinese art and culture past and present - Terracotta Warriors: Guardians of Immortality and Cai Guo-Qiang: The Transient Landscape - will be open to guests from 5.15–6.15pm.

Our Speakers:

Jason Fitts, Regional Specialist for China, Global Victoria, Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions

Jason Fitts

Mr Jason Fitts is the Regional Specialist for China in Global Victoria in the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions. In this role he works to facilitate exports to China and Chinese investment into Victoria. He was posted to the Australian Embassy in Beijing from 1997 to 2000 and worked in the economic section covering areas including bilateral trade and investment.

From 2007 he worked for two years in Beijing in the China Australia Governance Program, which undertook projects on economic governance. Mr Fitts has over ten years’ experience in the economic regulation of electricity, gas and water infrastructure at the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, the Australian Energy Regulator and the Victorian Essential Services Commission. He has a Masters in Public Policy from Princeton University and speaks and reads Mandarin.

Daniel Russel, Vice President, International Security and Diplomacy, Asia Society Policy Institute & former Assistant Secretary of State for Asia and the East Asian and Pacific Affairs

Daniel Russel is Vice President, International Security and Diplomacy, at the Asia Society Policy Institute (ASPI). He joined ASPI in April 2018 after a one-year term at the Institute as Diplomat-in-Residence and Senior Fellow. Formerly, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service at the U.S. Department of State, his most recent U.S. government position was serving as Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs.

During his 33-year diplomatic career, Mr. Russel received numerous awards, most recently the 2017 Presidential Rank Award. He served in East Asia, Western Europe, at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, and in Washington DC as Chief of Staff to the Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs.

Jewel Topsfield, Melbourne Editor, The Age (Moderator)

Jewel Topsfield

Jewel Topsfield is Melbourne editor at The Age. She was formerly national correspondent for the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age. From 2015 to 2018 she was Indonesia correspondent for both mastheads, based in Jakarta. Jewel has won multiple awards, including a Walkley for international journalism and the $20,000 Lowy Institute Media Award, which recognises journalists who have enriched the discussion of global issues in Australia.

Other roles include five years as the education editor of The Age and a three-year stint in the Canberra Press Gallery covering immigration, the environment and education.

At the beginning of 2019 Jewel was the Academic Program Officer for the ACICIS journalism professional practicum, where journalism students from Australian universities study and do an internship in Indonesia.

Jewel was also the launch deputy editor of Fairfax’s online opinion site, the National Times.

Dr Shirley Yu, Founder, Shirley Yu & Co. | Your Global Power on China

Shirley Yu

Shirley Yu is a former China National Television News Anchor, a seasoned senior executive for multinational corporates and board member. She is a frequent speaker on China’s political economy, geopolitics,and their implications to the transforming global order. She is currently a senior visiting fellow at the London School of Economics, and an Asia fellow with the Ash Center of Harvard Kennedy School.

She has a PhD in political economy from China’s Peking University, and a Master’s degree in Government from Harvard University. She has published three books in Chinese, including On China, By Ambassadors, and The Rise of the RMB and the Fall of the Yen.
