General Key Points

Developers and Contractors (originally, "businesses”) should:

  • Abide by host countries’ laws and regulations related to environmental and social risks and impacts.
Key Points on Stakeholder Engagement

Developers and Contractors should:

  • Establish two-way communication with stakeholders in an early, proactive, and transparent manner to communicate information about uncertainties, as well as potential risks, effectively and to deal with questions and complaints related to their activities.
  • Engage in transparent, unbiased dialogue with stakeholders.
Key Points on Environmental and Social Impact Assessment

Developers and Contractors should:

  • Support and respect internationally proclaimed human rights. Ensure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses and undertake due diligence continuously to identify, prevent, and mitigate negative human rights impacts that developers and contractors may cause or contribute to.
  • Implement systematic environmental and social assessment and management (ESAM).
  • Undertake initiatives to promote environmental responsibility. Create company policies that address sustainable development, economic prosperity, environmental quality, and social equity.
  • Measure, track, and communicate their progress on the implementation of sustainability principles into their business practices. This should include reporting their performance on global standards.
    • Use results to devise strategies for future improvement.
