REMAKING THE CHINESE CITY in Hong Kong Views of the City ' Art, Culture and Design in the Chinese City
VIEW EVENT DETAILSRemaking the Chinese City explores the development of the contemporary Chinese city across various dimensions including models of urban development, the relationship between public and private realms in urban China, and art and culture in the Chinese city. It is a global series featuring panel discussions in Beijing, New York, and Hong Kong with leading political, academic, artistic, and commercial figures from China and around the world.
The Hong Kong event will explore the influence of the city on artistic expression. What influence does a city's spaces have on its inhabitants? How do these influences manifest themselves in the arts? How can the creative industry, and the spaces where it has flourished, shed light on a city's cultural dynamics?
Panelists:
Rocco Yim is Executive Director of Rocco Design Architects Limited, which has received many awards and citations for design excellence. Trained in architecture at the University of Hong Kong, Yim is a member of the Advisory Council of the University of Hong Kong Department of Architecture and a museum advisor to the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
Johnson Chang Tsong-zung (moderator) is a curator, guest professor at the China Academy of Art, and director of Hanart TZ Gallery in Hong Kong. He has been actively curating Chinese exhibitions since the 1980s and was instrumental in establishing the international image of Chinese contemporary art of the 1990s with the seminal exhibition China's New Art Post-1989.
Qiulin Chen is an emerging artist deeply concerned with the impact of urbanization in China, and combines personal history with themes of demolition, migration, and transformation to express the reality for "ordinary people" in China. Her work includes performance, photography, video, installation, and sculpture. Chen graduated from the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts.
Wenyuan Wu is the CEO of Shenzhen APECLAND Design Co. Ltd. and visiting fellow at the China Development Institute. She is committed to research and innovation in planning and architectural design, and the preservation of local history and characteristics. Wu graduated from Chongqing Architectural Engineering Institute (now Chongqing University).
Dajuin Yao is a media artist, curator, and art historian. He is currently a professor at the Open Media Lab at the China Academy of Art. Yao has since 1997 organized various China Sound Units, a free-form collective aimed at the listening, re-thinking, archiving, and re-contextualizing of sounds in Chinese cities. He has a Ph.D. in art history from the University of California, Berkeley.
