Organized by the Art Promotion Office, Hi! Houses is an art project set out to re-think the use of space in old houses. The project has chosen four-century-old historic buildings in Hong Kong, namely the Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum, Old House at Wong Uk Village, Law Uk Folk Museum and Sam Tung Uk Museum and commissioned four local artists, Wilson Shieh, Lam Tung-pang, Fiona Wong and Jaffa Lam, to lead their teams to create site-specific artworks to inject new life into them. Moderated by Yang Yeung, this evening discussion will investigate the artists’ idiosyncratic visual lingo to discover how their works reflect the past inhabitants and what stories they had in the old houses. Art Promotion Office’s Lo Yan-yan will initiate the program with a curatorial overview of the project.
Jaffa Lam received her BFA, MFA and Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Specializing in mixed-media sculptures and installations that are large-scale and site-specific, Lam often uses recycled materials in her process. Her works explore issues related to cultural, societal and current affairs. In recent years, they appear in forms of public art and community projects in Hong Kong and overseas and are often experimental in nature and heritage sites. Lam was invited to take part in residency programs in various countries including Kenya, Taiwan, Bangladesh, China, United States, Canada, and Switzerland.
Wilson Shieh, born in Hong Kong in 1970, received his bachelor and master degrees in Fine Arts from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Shieh is known for his traditional Chinese gongbi (fine-brush) figure paintings of modern people and imaginative images. The content of his works ranges from sexuality, role play, and from costume change to the reconstruction of local cultural symbols. In recent years, he is expanding his creative media to printmaking, acrylic painting, drawing, collage, and publication. Shieh’s works are in the collections of Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong Heritage Museum, M+ Museum for Visual Culture, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Queensland Art Gallery, Asian Art Museum in San Francisco and Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.
Lam Tung-pang, born in 1978, currently lives and works in Hong Kong. Lam’s work is mostly related to specific situations or social contents and some of them are in monument scale by given a touch of humanity. Recent projects include Disappeared Hong Kong Art series and The Curiosity Box. He has exhibited extensively worldwide and has work in many private and public collections, including Deutsche Bank, Hong Kong Museum of Art, M+ Museum, K11 Foundation, Kadist Art Foundation and commission work by Hong Kong Legislative Council and MTR.
Fiona Wong graduated from the University of East Anglia and later obtained her MFA degree at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1997. She has been invited to various artist-in-residence programs all over the world. She received a Starr Fellowship award from Asian Cultural Council in 2000 and was invited to participate in the Hong Kong Eye exhibition held at Saatchi Gallery in London in 2012.
