Opening Ceremony of Picturing Asia: Double Take - The Photography of Brian Brake and Steve McCurry
HONG KONG, September 8, 2016 — Asia Society Hong Kong Center unveiled its latest exhibition, Picturing Asia: Double Take - The Photography of Brian Brake and Steve McCurry, with an opening ceremony on September 8, 2016. The exhibition is generously supported by the lead sponsor, MetLife Foundation and other partners. It is on display from September 10, 2016 to January 7, 2017.
Picturing Asia: Double Take sheds light on Brake and McCurry’s common passion in capturing the many facets of Asia. In 1961, when an 11-year-old McCurry saw Brake’s celebrated photo essay of the Indian monsoon, a flame was kindled which eventually compelled him to document the same enigmatic climatic phenomenon 20 years later. Their monsoon photographs form a dialogue from which this exhibition starts. Showcasing over 90 images, the exhibition traces Brake and McCurry’s efforts in bringing Asia's cultural richness to the eyes of the global audiences. “Picturing” in the title proposes a double meaning – of taking a picture, and of imagining one.
About 200 photography aficionados and friends of ASHK joined the opening ceremony, followed by a gallery tour.
