Pang Jiun was born in 1936 into an artistic family in Shanghai, with ancestral roots in Changshu, Jiangsu province. His father, Pang Xunqin, studied oil painting in France and upon returning to China, co-founded the modern art group "Storm Society" along with Ni Yide. He was a pioneer of modern Chinese art and dedicated his life to arts and crafts education. Pang Jiun’s mother, Qiu Ti, was also a talented artist who studied in Japan before returning home and becoming an important member of the "Storm Society".
The "Proclamations of the Storm Society" in 1932 was written by artists Pang Xunqin and Ni Yide, with a mission to spearhead the emerging art movement in China and an unwavering determination to turn the tide against the prevailing decline, they called for artists who had studied in Japan and France to boldly pose thought-provoking questions to the Chinese art scene, unleashing a resounding roar that reverberated throughout the world.
This proclamation sparked the first awakening in modern art development, stirring a renaissance in artistic ontology. It became a ray of hope, heralding a new dawn in the history of Chinese modern art.
Ninety years have passed, yet the resounding proclamation of the "Storm Society" still echoes in our ears. What brings joy is that the spirit of the Storm Society has not been drowned by the tides of time. Instead, it continues to shine brightly in the footsteps of successive artists, upholding the spirit of openness and inclusivity, radiating in the new era.
Pang Jiun, hailed as a master of "Eastern Expressionism," is now approaching his nineties, yet he continues to diligently create art. Throughout his consistent artistic journey, Pang Jiun has always harbored a sense of mission to create Chinese oil paintings. Through his keen and delicate sense of color and vivid, precise lines, he captures moments of enlightenment in life, expressing boundless passion for existence. No longer constrained by the shackles of traditional oil painting, his graceful and transcendental brushwork at times resembles an exuberant dance, at times an elegant and lyrical lament. The Eastern charm flows like a song within his artworks, presenting a unique and unmistakable "Pang Jiun style." It is instantly recognizable yet carries infinite depths of meaning.
The exhibition Beacon in the Storm: The Art of Pang Jiun showcases 48 artworks in total by the artist Pang Jiun, which includes nine precious sketches created in the 1970s and 39 paintings created in recent years. Through the juxtaposition of artworks from different eras, it is evident that Pang Jiun's exploration of color in his paintings has surpassed the realm of color achieved by Chinese predecessors. Furthermore, he continuously subverts his own artistic expressions in an evolutionary manner – from the discovery and completion of the "Grey Tone" to the current state of "Radiant Brilliance." This breakthrough signifies the personal development of Pang Jiun's oil paintings and adds a splendid chapter to the history of world oil painting.
When Wu Dayu served as the head of the Western Painting Department at Hangzhou School of Art (now China Academy of Art), he expressed his aspirations for artists, stating that they should be able to introduce Western art, organize Chinese art, reconcile Chinese and Western art, and create art for the times. Pang Jiun's lifelong artistic practice aligns with these ideals. He aims to construct a form of oil painting that is uniquely Chinese. In his exploration of the artistic expression of Eastern aesthetics, he embodies the profound essence of the "Storm Society spirit." With bold and unrestrained brushwork, and rich and vibrant colors, he fulfills his mission of dedicating his life to Chinese oil painting art and even to the cultural arts of the Chinese nation. He fearlessly carries the torch of the "Storm Society spirit" and perseveres in scaling the walls that define art, allowing ideals and passion to ignite in the vast sea and evoke enormous waves for the new era.

The Pursuit of Beauty
I am very grateful to Asia Society Hong Kong for organizing an exhibition for me at the age of 87. This is a rare and wonderful opportunity in my life. Looking back on my 76-year artistic journey, I have never stopped creating except for times of illness. This is my dedication to pursuing beauty in all things in life through my art.
From my perspective, everything in life inherently possesses infinite poeticism, melodic rhythm, and captivating colors. I am merely absorbing and enjoying the elements of beauty in all things, and I have finally come to realize that the artistic expression originates from the emotional depths of ones’ soul, and nothing more.
The sensation and the language of color are the only essences of artistic expression.

In 1932, a group of young Chinese artists declared to the world that the Chinese people must embrace their own modern art, which led to the emergence of the Storm Society. Pang Xunqin, together with Ni Yide, wrote the Proclamations of the Storm Society, with the aim of pursuing freedom in the art of the new generation. They refused to be slaves to religion or mere illustrations of literature. Their only goal was to express the bold spirit and vitality of China's new generation of art, constructing an artistic world of pure form.
However, nearly a century has passed and this rebellious ideal has long been submerged by the unforgiving flood of time.
Pang Jiun is the son of Pang Xunqin and Qiu Ti, the main founders of the Storm Society. He has inherited his parents' unique artistic talent. At the young age of 13, he was admitted to the National Hangzhou School of Art, becoming the youngest university student at that time. Hailing from an intellectual family, Pang Jiun is cultured, humble, and polite. His works not only display delicate lines and genuine emotions but also perfectly combine the vibrant colors of Western art with the subtle philosophical thoughts of Eastern art. This is the DNA of the Storm Society, which has further evolved in the hands of Master Pang.
This exhibition is held at the Asia Society Hong Kong Center. It showcases 48 important works by Pang Jiun, including 9 valuable sketches created in the 70s and 39 pieces of new artwork created after his large-scale retrospective exhibition in Hong Kong in 2018. Even at the age of 87, Pang Jiun insists on creating art every day. With the spirit of tirelessly challenging oneself and surpassing oneself, he embodies the spirit of the Storm Society and has achieved an extraordinary and transcendent artistic temperament. Asia Society has always been dedicated to promoting Asian culture to the world, and we hope that this exhibition will not only promote Pang Jiun's art, but also showcase his indomitable spirit of Chinese literati to the world.
When I visited Master Pang earlier this year, he expressed his hope to giving all he has left to his art with the aim of reaching new heights. I wish him good health and hope that he continues to shine for arts and culture of China and the world.
Time flies over us but leaves its shadow behind — I sincerely hope that his indomitable spirit will ignite a ray of hope in our journey through the storms of life, once again leading us to experience the interplay of colors, lines, and forms in this world.
History, has gone with the wind, but we must continue to press on in this solo journey of life.

In the early 19th century, China grappled with internal turmoil and external challenges, as waves of Western cultural and artistic innovation surged forth. This transformative period left an indelible imprint on Chinese society and its artistic landscape. In response to these far-reaching changes, a cohort of visionary artists embarked on journeys abroad, immersing themselves in Western artistic techniques and ideas. Inspired by the call of Mr. Cai Yuanpei, the esteemed president of Peking University, who championed art education as an embodiment of spiritual enlightenment, these artists hastened to pioneer the development of modern Chinese art, laying a solid foundation for subsequent artistic movements.
In that era, in that land, the passionate and spirited youth of China, their wrists held high, wielded the pen as their sword – amidst the flames of the Republic and the groans of despair, a new wave of thought ignited and burst forth.
"Proclamations of the Storm Society" in 1932 was written by artists Pang Xunqin and Ni Yide, with a mission to spearhead the emerging art movement in China and an unwavering determination to turn the tide against the prevailing decline, they called for artists who had studied in Japan and France to boldly pose thought-provoking questions to the Chinese art scene, unleashing a resounding roar that reverberated throughout the world.
This proclamation sparked the first awakening in modern art development, stirring a renaissance in artistic ontology. It became a ray of hope, heralding a new dawn in the history of Chinese modern art.
Ninety years have passed, and today we find ourselves in awe as Pang Jiun, the son of Pang Xunqin and Qiu Ti, the founders of the Storm Society, skillfully employs the brushwork of Western oil painting to present the expressive lyricism of the East. In this reflection, we cannot help but be swept back to that extraordinary four-year period in the annals of Chinese art history, and we cannot help but sigh in admiration for the vibrant vitality of contemporary Chinese art today.
The spirit of the Storm Society is like a bold stroke of ink in the vast scroll of history. It portrays the grandeur and magnitude of historical events, depicting the indomitable power within the ups and downs of life. It embodies the essence of Chinese culture and art, as well as the cutting-edge trends of the new era.
Through rise and fall, the melody plays on;
Beacon in the Storm, his brushstrokes carry on
興衰往復,弦歌不輟;
