On the evening of Friday, July 6th, 2018, Asia Society Hong Kong Center invites the public to our memorial screening of A Visit to the Star of Hope: Coffee with Robert Indiana to pay homage to Robert Indiana, the star of our current exhibition LOVE Long: Robert Indiana and Asia.
An intimate visit with one of America’s foremost contemporary artists, the film offers a glimpse inside the life and career of the artist who gave us the iconic image LOVE. Through candid conversations and a tour of his home, a rambling Victorian lodge hall he calls the Star of Hope, Indiana offers us insight into the motivations of some of his most important works and gives the viewer a comprehensive look at a fascinating career.
This will be the global premiere screening of the documentary since it was remastered in High Definition. The documentary now also includes new photographs and artwork not seen in the original version.
The documentary will be followed by a post-screening Q&A session with the filmmaker Dale Schierholt who will join us via Skype from the West Coast of America.
Dale Schierholt is a documentary filmmaker known for his intimate, conversational portraits of compelling personalities, many of them renowned visual artists. Working one on one without a crew, Schierholt builds a rapport with his subjects, engaging in the intimate and candid discussions that have become a hallmark of his film work. His informal style gives us more than the customary facts, data and archival material. He strives for a unique level of intimacy in his films which gives viewers the atmosphere of a personal visit, offering insight into his subject’s inspirations and motivations. His films have screened at Festivals and venues across the country and aired on PBS affiliates across the US, from New York to California.
