Asia Society Hong Kong Center (ASHK) is pleased to host a lunch and panel discussion with Mr. Woody Preucil, 13D Research & Strategy Senior Managing Director, and Mr. Cyrus Afkhami, Managing Director at 13D, to discuss the increasingly contentious struggle between the US and China over advanced technologies – a so-called “tech arms race” – with Mr. Ronnie C. Chan, Chairman of Asia Society Hong Kong Center.
As China bridges the technological gap with the United States, how will the balance of power change between these two great nations? Who will come out on top? What does the race for dominance mean for the global economy and investors? How will the changing geopolitical order lead to new opportunities in the global economy? Join ASHK to hear the answers to these questions and to pose a few of your own.
Woodley “Woody” Preucil is Senior Managing Director of 13D Research & Strategy. Woody has been instrumental in driving the growth of 13D’s business for over 35 years by being actively involved in the identification, development, and analysis of many of the firm’s core investment themes. Three key areas Woody focuses his research on are: (1) the implications of climate change, including water scarcity, agriculture, and clean energy; (2) global security, including military, homeland security, cybersecurity, and bioterrorism/public health; and (3) disruptive technologies that provide solutions to economic problems and transform industries. Woody guides a team of analysts and leads the firm’s cutting-edge research to focus on several key converging technologies that drive innovation across the global economy.
Early in his tenure at 13D, Woody performed M&A analysis for consulting clients, conducted research in arbitrage trading and special situations, and served as publisher of the firm’s original flagship research publication, The 13D Opportunities Report.
Woody received a BA in Economics and Accounting from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1983, has been a Chartered Financial Analyst since 1987, and is a member of the New York Society of Security Analysts and the CFA Institute.
Cyrus Afkhami is Managing Director at 13D Research and Strategy. Cyrus joined 13D in 2021.
He covers geopolitics, where his focus is to identify investment themes that will outperform as the geopolitical balance of power transitions from a unipolar to a multipolar world order. Cyrus’s geopolitical analysis seeks to identify long-term geopolitical trends that will impact every investor’s portfolio. In a multipolar world order, geopolitics will become an increasingly important component to the investment decision-making process.
Cyrus also leads 13D’s Bitcoin research. Cyrus’s research covers a range of topics including Bitcoin’s immutable monetary properties, the critical role of energy expenditure to secure the network, the importance of Proof-of-Work, the Lightning Network, developments in Layer-2, and nation-state adoption. Cyrus brings a unique geopolitical angle to his Bitcoin research. The geopolitical implications of Bitcoin are one of the most under-appreciated and least discussed aspects of Bitcoin. This will become even more critical as we enter a multipolar world order. While Cyrus’s research makes a clear distinction between Bitcoin and the rest of the Digital Assets ecosystem, his research has also covered Ethereum, regulatory developments, DeFi, stablecoins, non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and CBDCs. Cyrus also oversees Kiril Sokoloff’s many VC investments in crypto.
Prior to 13D, Cyrus founded an education company in 2011, building it into a leading education consultancy and private-tuition provider, focusing on the British education system. He began his career in London, working in M&A at Lehman Brothers (later Nomura) before moving to Citigroup where he worked in the European Equity Capital Markets division.
Cyrus graduated from the University of Oxford with a First Class degree in History and Modern Languages, specialising in the Middle East. At Oxford, he was awarded an Academic scholarship. More recently, in 2019, he completed a course in Blockchain in Business from Columbia Business School Executive Education.
