Filmmaker Jennifer Lin will discuss the making of TEN TIMES BETTER, a short documentary about George Lee, an 89-year-old blackjack dealer in Las Vegas with an unheralded place in ballet and Broadway history.

Born in Hong Kong in 1935, George was a dance prodigy who grew up in wartime Shanghai before moving to New York City, where he caught the eye of George Balanchine. The great choreographer cast him in the New York City Ballet’s 1954 premiere of The Nutcracker.

George switched to Broadway, working with Gene Kelly in Flower Drum Song. After a career in musical theater, George learned to deal blackjack, which he does to this day.

For 31 years, Jennifer worked at The Philadelphia Inquirer as a reporter, including posts in Beijing, New York and Washington, D.C. She made a documentary and wrote a book —both entitled Beethoven in Beijing—about the Philadelphia Orchestra’s China legacy. She also published a family memoir, Shanghai Faithful: Betrayal and Forgiveness in a Chinese Christian Family.
