In The Sand Turtle Theadora Whittington both writes and stunningly illustrates a moving picture book story of a boy’s friendship with a turtle which he creates from sand.
The Sand Turtle has a strong environmental message which is welcomed and endorsed by WWF (Hong Kong) in its valuable work concerning the plight of green turtles..
The sometimes difficult theme of loss and re-creation is also beautifully explored within this story:
Sand is a wonderful substance. You can create and re-create shapes, forms, and once in a while, miracles . . .
Join the Book Fair 2023 - English and International Reading Series for a sharing by Theadora for exploration of environmental messages in picture books as well as other important issues pertinent for our young children.
Theadora Whittington is both an author and an illustrator, with an MA in Children’s Book Illustration from the Cambridge School of Art in UK. She has been based in Hong Kong since 2004. Three picture books which Theadora wrote and illustrated specifically for the children of Hong Kong: ‘The Dragon’s Back’, ‘The Sand Turtle’ and ‘The Mermaid and the Pink Dolphin’ have been exceptionally well received here, particularly all in the many international schools. The stories have strong local environmental themes — ‘The Sand Turtle’ and ‘The Mermaid and the Pink Dolphin’ were both endorsed by WWF (Hong Kong).
