The House of Yan is a gripping memoir that tells the tale of several generations of the Yan family’s significant contributions to contemporary China and its fight for survival within the political struggles quickened by the onslaught of the Cultural Revolution. From an elite childhood to the hardships of life in a re-education camp, Lan Yan canvasses the great historical changes witnessed by her generation with visible reverberations to the present. Her grandfather was a prominent member of the Communist Party of China and a contemporary of notable Chinese leaders in the 20th century, criss-crossing the pages of history with Zhou Enlai, Deng Xiaoping, Zhang Xueliang, Soong May-ling, and Chiang Kai Shek. Her father was Mao Zedong’s personal Russian translator. In dialogue with Carol Yu of “Visionaries” at Phoenix TV, come hear Ms. Lan Yan re-tell an intimate and sweeping account of a century of Chinese history from the vantage point of her influential role today as a successful business leader in the new China era.
