Mainly based on the book U Tat Chee: The Ginger King in Post-War Hong Kong, published by CityU Press, this exhibition presents an overview of the housing, education, and industry conditions in the 1950s – 1960s using historically valuable images, publications, and maps. It also introduces the history of Tat Chee Avenue and Yau Yat Chuen, as well as the specific contributions of U Tat Chee to their development.

Mr. U Tat Chee, who is highly regards as the “Ginger King”, made significant contributions to the community’s economy, people’s livelihood and education, other than just developing his own business. His ginger candy business started in 1937 when he and a few friends took over the Chy Loong Ginger Factory, the oldest of the 11 such factories in Hong Kong then. To ensure the quality of the ginger candy produced in Hong Kong, he made a collaboration with the other 10 factories to form Hong Kong Preserved Ginger Distributor Limited. With this collaboration, and the increasing demand during the world war, the industry bloomed once again.
