Follow Asia Society Hong Kong Center on an artist guided tour of Phantasmagoria, a solo exhibition of Kary Kwok.
About the Exhibition
Phantasmagoria is a solo exhibition by Kary Kwok presented by Square Street Gallery. Marking the Hong Kong artist’s first solo presentation at a commercial gallery in over two decades, Kwok will showcase a series of black-and-white nude self-portraits from 1993.
Kwok’s series was inspired by the mystical erotic drawing The Hermaphrodite-Angel of Peladan (c. 1950s) by American artist Raymond Carrance (1921–88)—also known under his pseudonym Czanara—which references a French Occult Revivalist who found radicality in the androgyne. Here, Kwok situates himself in the corner of his studio sporting minimal makeup and costumes. His gaze unaverted, he guides his body to reach the limits of gender.
About the Artist
Hong Kong artist Kary Kwok (b. 1964, lives and works in Hong Kong and London) works between photography, installation, and fashion. Since receiving his M.A. in photography from the Royal College of Arts in London, his work has engaged with the perceptions and demands put on marginalised bodies and subjectivities by normative society. Associated with the Black Arts Movement, he has since collaborated with a number of artists including Sonia Boyce, Hiriam To, and Franko B. He was a prize winner of the 1994 Southbank Photo Show in London and was the artist-in-residence at Leube Foundation, Salzburg, Austria, and subsequently the subject of a solo exhibition titled “I am not what I am” in the Rupertinum of Museum der Moderne Salzburg.
