With Pandit Shubhendra Rao and Saskia Rao-de Haas (and Belle Shiu on the pipa, with kind permission of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and guitarist Tjoe Man Cheung)
A musical celebration that brings together renowned sitar player Pandit Shubhendra Rao, disciple of Sitar Maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar, along with cellist Saskia Rao- de Haas, in a unique performance that will showcase both the classical-traditional as well as East-West collaborative elements, legacies of his Guru’s style.
Joining them will be Belle Shiu on the pipa (with kind permission of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra).
Pandit Shubhendra Rao is a composer and performer, ranked amongst the key soloists of India who lived with his guru, Pandit Ravi Shankar in the Guru-Shishya Parampara for over 10 years, assisting him in concerts and compositions all over the world. He is an unmatched master at his instrument whose playing reminds the listener of the masters of yore transformed into today’s era. Shubhendra is a musical ambassador by his natural ability to bridge cultures across the world.
Saskia Rao De-Haas is a brilliant cellist and composer from the Netherlands who is based in India. She has enriched North Indian classical music with her unique instrument, the Indian cello, and created a distinctive playing style with it. She studied with Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia as well as at top institutes in the West, CODARTS and University of Amsterdam. In addition to her prestigious status in India, Saskia is an accomplished Western classical cellist. In 2011, Saskia was awarded the ‘Pandit Jasraj – Rotary Club of Hyderabad Award’ for Cross-Cultural Understanding by the Maestro himself at a scintillating ceremony in Hyderabad.
Belle Shiu (By kind permission of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra.) is currently a pipa virtuoso with the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. She completed her Master of Music programme at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) in 2016, under the supervision of Zhang Ying. She started learning the pipa at the age of 8 yrs under Li Ping, and was coached by the famous virtuosi Yang Jing and Ren Hong. She also trained in nanyin pipa under Ong Chay-tin and zheng under Luo Jing.
Tjoe Man Cheung is a London-based musician who can always surprise a crowd with his engaging tunes, powerful soloing and unique improvisation.
About India by The Bay:
India by the Bay is a week-long celebration of Indian art and culture co-presented by Teamwork Arts and the Asia Society Hong Kong Center, with the support of the Consulate General of India in Hong Kong. The festival features literature, music, food, dance and theatre, encompassing both the contemporary and classic.
The Festival is dedicated to promoting mutual understanding and strengthening partnerships between India and Hong Kong. It is a unique opportunity for the people of Hong Kong to experience and engage with India’s rich cultural heritage.
