The U.S. midterm elections in November 2018 produced divided control of government and seemingly greater polarization amongst the American electorate. But how will this outcome impact policymaking on key issues within the United States, and the conduct of foreign policy toward Asia? In particular, will U.S. strategic and economic relations with China become more fraught as President Trump looks toward a likely re-election campaign in 2020? Hoover Institution fellow and Stanford University public policy faculty member Lanhee Chen — a frequent commentator on geopolitical and policy issues — provides his unique perspective on these questions.
Domestic Policy Studies and Lecturer in the Public Policy Program, and an Affiliate of the Freeman-Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University. He is a veteran of several high-profile political campaigns, including four presidential efforts. In 2012, he was policy director of the Romney-Ryan campaign, and served as Governor Mitt Romney’s chief policy adviser. Mr. Chen is an Operating Partner at New Road Capital Partners and Senior Counselor at Brunswick Group. He was honored in 2015 as one of the POLITICO 50, a list of the “thinkers, doers and visionaries transforming American politics.” Mr. Chen received his A.B. in government from Harvard College, J.D. from Harvard Law School, and Ph.D. in political science from Harvard University.
