Asia Society Hong Kong Center is proud to present the Chairman’s Dialogue Series, a specially curated series of marquee events bringing together distinguished guests from around the world for conversations with Ronnie Chan, Chairman of Asia Society Hong Kong Center.
In this conversation, Mr. Chan will be joined by Nobel Prize Laureate Roger Kornberg, Winzer Professor in Medicine in the Department of Structural Biology at Stanford University, to discuss the importance of investing in and focusing on basic science in solving the most pressing challenges of our time, including future pandemics, the clean energy transition, and the challenges presented by climate change.
Roger Kornberg (B.A., Harvard College, 1967, Ph.D., Chemistry, Stanford University, 1972) is Winzer Professor in Medicine in the Department of Structural Biology at Stanford University. In his doctoral research, he demonstrated the diffusional motions of lipids in membranes, termed flip-flop and lateral diffusion. He was a postdoctoral fellow and member of the scientific staff at the Laboratory of Molecular biology in Cambridge, England from 1972-5, where he discovered the nucleosome, the basic unit of DNA coiling in chromosomes. He moved to his present position in 1978, where his research has focused on the mechanism and regulation of eukaryotic gene transcription. Notable findings include the demonstration of the role of nucleosomes in transcriptional regulation, the establishment of a yeast RNA polymerase II transcription system and the isolation of all the proteins involved, the discovery of the Mediator of transcriptional regulation, the development of two-dimensional protein crystallization and its application to transcription proteins, and the atomic structure determination of an RNA polymerase II transcribing complex. Kornberg was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1993. He has received many awards, including the Welch prize (2001), highest award in chemistry in the United States, the Leopold Mayer Prize (2002), highest award in biomedical sciences of the French Academy of Sciences, and the Nobel Prize in Chemistry (unshared, 2006). Kornberg’s closest collaborator has been his wife, Dr. Yahli Lorch. They have three children, Guy, Maya, and Gil.
Kornberg directs research laboratories in the United States (Stanford University), Israel (the Hebrew University), and China (ShanghaiTech University). He has co-founded biotech, computational, and materials science companies with Larry Ellison, Philip Frost, and Sir Leonard Blavatnik. He serves as Chairman and member of Board of Directors, and Chair and member of Scientific Advisory Board of eighteen companies. He is Founding Chairman of the World Laureates Association (Hong Kong) and Founding President of the World Laureates Association Laboratories (Shanghai).
Ronnie C. Chan (Moderator) is the Chair of Hang Lung Group Limited and its subsidiary Hang Lung Properties Limited, both publicly listed in Hong Kong. Hang Lung expanded into mainland China in 1992, developing, owning and managing world-class commercial complexes in key tier one and tier two cities. Mr. Chan co-founded Morningside, a diversified investment group engaged in private equity and venture capital investments in North America, Asia, and Europe. Mr. Chan is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Chair Emeritus of the Asia Society and Chairman of its Hong Kong Center, and Co-Founder and Chairman of the Centre for Asian Philanthropy and Society.
